2 Amazing Nights Camping in Yosemite

2 Amazing Nights Camping in Yosemite

How to spend 2 Amazing Nights Camping in Yosemite

We got to enjoy 2 amazing nights camping in Yosemite in August.

Camping in Yosemite is VERY competitive. However, we found it completely necessary to camp in Yosemite National Park due to the lack of affordable accommodations in the area and to become fully immersed in nature.

In order to book our camp reservation for August, we had to check the Yosemite National Park’s website to see when campsite reservations would be available.

Overall, we loved the 2 nights of Camping in Yosemite. View our Gallery for photos from the trip or watch our Yosemite YouTube Video!

There are 13 campsites at Yosemite National Park that are grouped into 3 section

  1. Yosemite Valley
  2. South of Yosemite Valley
  3. North of Yosemite Valley – our favorite

What we learned from 2 nights of camping in Yosemite:

Yosemite Valley

The campsites within Yosemite Valley are the most sought after because you are close to Yosemite Falls, Half Dome Trail, and the Merced River.

In my opinion, this would be convenient if you want to be right next to the happening spots. However, I was very happy that we did not camp here. Mainly due to the heavy smoke accumulation in the morning from local wildfires.

2 Amazing Nights Camping in Yosemite

South of Yosemite Valley

We spent about 3 hours here when we were leaving the National Park to head back to San Fransico. We greatly enjoyed walking through Mariposa Grove (the Giant Sequoias are here). Although seeing the trees was a life-changing experience, I would not enjoy camping in this location because the drive to Yosemite Valley and Tiago Pass is very long.

Tiago Road Yosemite Valley alpine basin

North of Yosemite Valley is where we camped for 2 nights. We absolutely enjoyed our experience!

There are 7 campsites located in North Yosemite Valley.

Specifically, we camped at Hodgdon Meadow Campground, campsite # 67.

Since reserving a campsite is super competitive, we took what we could get when trying to reserve a campsite. We ended up having the best experience ever!

We read bad reviews about this campsite; however, campsite #67 was perfect. Not too far from the bathroom, pretty level surface, enough space between campsites and on the outside edge of the campsite, which equaled quietness!

The one potential negative about this campsite was that it is about a 45-minute drive to the Valley floor; however, the drive is beautiful and totally worth it.

2 Amazing Nights Camping in Yosemite Alpine Basin

When camping in Yosemite, please be courteous of others:

Yes, bear boxes are loud but so important to save the life of a bear. As many say, a fed bear is a dead bear.

Yes, people get up early to go hiking or climbing. It will be noisy before the sun rises.

and please LEAVE NO TRACE! To learn more about how to camp safely and how to leave no trace, check out this article.

7 Leave No Trace Principles

When visiting or camping in Yosemite National Park (or anywhere outside) it is important to remember the 7 Leave No Trace Principles:

1) Plan Ahead and Prepare

2) Travel and Camp on Durable Surfaces

3) Dispose of Waste Properly

4) Leave What you Find

5) Minimize Campfire Impacts

6) Respect Wildlife

7) Be Considerate of Other Visitors

For the safety of yourself and wildlife, please be sure to keep a safe distance. If you have the urge to get up close, be sure to think twice and bring binoculars or a telephoto lens.

At Alpine Basin, we hope to inspire Relaxation and a deeper appreciation for Nature!

We hope you will also experience 2 amazing nights camping in Yosemite!

Jackson Hole is located at the South Entrance of Yellowstone National Park, check out our vacation guide to when planning your vacation to Yellowstone National Park.

First Stop: Signal Mountain

Located at 7,727 feet, the peak of Signal Mountain will provide panoramic views of the gorgeous Grand Teton Mountains.

For access to the mountain peak, visitors can either drive to the top of the mountain or hike the 6.8 mile roundtrip trail.

1 Adventurous Day to Jackson Hole

Second Stop: Phelps Lake

There is an amazing trail systems that is located off Moose-Wilson Road. Although this road is closed during the winter months, the road provides visitors with access to forest and marsh habitats and is an excellent location for viewing wildlife from a safe distance.

From Moose-Wilson Road, arrive at the Laurance S. Rockefeller Preserve Center. Here is where you will park for the Woodland Trail that will lead you on a journey to the secluded Phelps Lake.

Prior to hiking any trail, be sure to reference a map and have the supplies that are needed for a safe and fun trip.

While hiking in Jackson Hole, we strongly recommend anyone to purchase Bear Spray before hiking. Bears are very common and you would rather have the Bear Spray on the trail than be stranded with no way to defend yourself.

Glacier National Park is a beautiful place to vacation. From the scenic views, wildlife and endless trails to explore – Anyone will be able to enjoy their vacation getaway

What we loved most about visiting Glacier is the vast amount of remote trails that are available to hike. From quick walks off of the main road to backcountry trails, there are experiences for everyone will enjoy. Also, if hiking is not for you, take a boat tour on Lake McDonald to enjoy the beauty of Glacier at your own pace.

Day 1: Arrive in Kalispell, Montana

Logistics

When booking a vacation, be sure to pick a flight that will land early enough in the day to enjoy time exploring Whitefish, Montana.

Flight

The most convenient airport to fly into for Glacier National Park is Glacier International Airport. Located 24 miles away from the Park’s west entrance, which makes this airport the closest to fly into for visiting the Park.

Rental Car

When visiting Glacier National Park, we recommend renting a car through Enterprise. The rental car service is offsite; however, Enterprise offers a complimentary shuttle service to take you to and from the airport.

Hotel

During your 3 day vacation to Glacier National Park, we recommend staying in two different hotels. On the first night of vacation, we recommend staying in is the Hampton Inn & Suites Whitefish. This town is conveniently located about 30 minutes away from the Park.

For the next two nights of the vacation, we recommend staying inside the park at the Lake Mcdonald Lodge. When booking accommodations at the lodge be sure to book well in advance as it is very popular and books up quickly. We loved staying on Lake Mcdonald. For our stay, we booked a small cabin that overlooked the lake and was right next to the main lodge.

Lake McDonald Lodge Glacier National Park

Food

Dinner

To prepare for the adventure ahead, we enjoyed having dinner in downtown Whitefish at the Mackenzie River Pizza Co. Their unique pizzas were delicious and the brussel sprout side dish was absolutely amazing.

Bonus

One of our favorite drinks that we got to enjoy while visiting Glacier is the Rough Cut Hard Cider called Bear Food. We love a good cider and the Bear Food cider was one of the best ciders we have ever enjoyed.

Day 2: Glacier National Park

Activities

On the first official day in Glacier National Park, you will begin the day by entering the park via the famous Going to the Sun Road. When visiting the park, be sure to check if the Going to the Sun Road is fully open as it is closed most of the year due to extreme winter weather conditions that occur at the peak of the road.

Unique 3 Day Itinerary to Glacier National Park: Avalanche Lake

Hiking

After arriving in the park, drive over to Avalanche Lake, a nice 4.5-mile roundtrip adventure. We loved this trail since it is not very strenuous, contains beautiful waterfalls and a gorgeous lake at the end of the hike. The Avalanche Lake hike is one of the more popular trails in the Park, so be sure to arrive early to ensure you will find a parking spot.

While hiking in Montana, we strongly recommend anyone to purchase Bear Spray before hiking. Bears are very common in Montana and you would rather have the Bear Spray on the trail than be stranded with no way to defend yourself.

Water Activities

At Lake Mcdonald lodge, you will find a variety of water activities for your enjoyment. Such as:

  • Boat tour
  • 8 hp motorboat rental
  • Rowboat rental
  • Paddleboat rental
  • Double Kayaks rental

Exploring Glacier National Park is an excellent way to get fully immersed in the unique beauty of the Park.

Day 3: Glacier National Park

Activities

During your final day of vacation, we recommend staying around the Lake Mcdonald area to enjoy the sights that are within walking distance. Across the street from the Lodge, there are a variety of trails within the Sperry Trailhead network.

Located over 6 miles from the start of Sperry Trailhead is a chalet that was originally built in 1913 and consumed by a wildfire in 2017. During the trek, you will notice many trees that are still burned from the dangerous wildfire that spread throughout the region.

On our adventure, we decided to hike to Fish Lake, a 6-mile round trip hike to a remote lake. This hike is one of the less populated trails that we experienced.  The fragile trees throughout this trail created a spooky hike that was very much worth the over 900 feet of elevation that was gain during the journey.

After the 6-mile hike, we recommend relaxing at the lodge and enjoying the final day in the Park. However, if you want a little more sightseeing, go check out the Sacred Dancing Cascade falls.  We enjoyed walking over the bridge that spanned across the river in order to have the best view of the waterfall.

fun 3 day guide to Yellowstone National Park

Day 1: Arrive in Bozeman, Montana

Logistics

When planning your trip to Yellowstone National Park, be sure to book a flight that will land in Bozeman during the morning hours. We recommend landing by 11:00 am to sightsee on your first day of vacation.

Flight

There are several airports to choose from when visiting Yellowstone National Park. For our vacation, we flew into Bozeman Yellowstone International Airport.

Bozeman airport will maximize cost efficiencies and is conveniently located to the North and West entrances of the Park.

Additionally, Bozeman airport is conveniently located about an hour from West Yellowstone, where we stayed during our vacation.

Rental Car

To maximize comfort during our long weekend vacation, we rented a mid-sized SUV. This ended up being an ideal choice since you can be in the car for longer than anticipated when visiting the park due to animal traffic jams (More on this later).

We had an amazing experience renting from Enterprise in Bozeman. It is important to note that this car rental location is not at the airport, and is a short 10-mile drive via a taxi.

Hotel

When visiting Yellowstone National Park in 3 days, the location of where you start is very important. You have a limited amount of time to adventure, and the last thing anyone would want to do is drive hours to get to the park. This is why staying in West Yellowstone is the best option and is conveniently located less than 1-mile away from the West entrance of the park.

There are dozens of hotels to choose from when staying in West Yellowstone; however, after our research and experience, we highly recommend staying at the Crosswinds Inn. This hotel offers a complimentary breakfast buffet and free fresh baked cookies all day long.

Activities

After you have arrived in West Yellowstone and checked into your hotel, head over to the West entrance of the park. Here is where you will purchase the park pass, receive a map of the park and a newspaper that includes the latest park news.  This newspaper ended up being very helpful as you will mostly not have access to cellphone service in the park and the newspaper included the Park’s restaurant hours.

During your first afternoon in Yellowstone, following the road from the West entrance to the right towards Old Faithful. On this road, you will pass by several geyser basins to explore, the Grand Prismatic Springs, and finally end up at Old Faithful.

There are wooden boardwalks at each site that will allow you to get up close to each natural wonder. While on the boardwalks, you will come across many “danger” signs. It is very important to remain on the boardwalks to ensure no one is injured on your family vacation, as the thermal grounds are very dangerous.

Food

Lunch

After you picked up the rental car and before driving to West Yellowstone, get lunch at Foxtrot in Bozeman, MT. This restaurant was amazing and was a good way to start out the adventure.

Dinner

Once you have toured around the geyser basins, grab a pizza for dinner from Wild West Pizzeria & Saloon in West Yellowstone.

Day 2: Grand Canyon of Yellowstone & Hayden Valley

Activities

First Stop

The Grand Canyon of Yellowstone is an enormous waterfall that plunges 308 feet. Seeing the steep depth of the Canyon is truly a breathtaking experience. Over the centuries, hot springs have weakened the rock on the canyon walls, where you may be able to see geysers spraying into the river.

While you are exploring the Cayon, be sure to check out the Inspiration Point to experience an amazing view. Another fun trail to hike when visiting the Grand Canyon of Yellowstone is the Brink of the Lower Falls, where you will have the opportunity to stand at the top of the famous Yellowstone waterfall.

Check out the National Park Service website here for more information.

Second Stop

The next adventure is to drive through Hayden Valley, which is located south of the Grand Canyon of Yellowstone. The vast amount of fields and hills in this region of the Park, provide an excellent destination to view all sorts of wildlife. From Great Blue Herons to Bison, Hayden Valley was a beautiful stop.

Third Stop

Continue your journey south to Yellowstone lake. During the summer months, this lake offers various water activities that you can enjoy on your vacation; however, during our vacation in Mid-May, the lake was still frozen! Although it would have been amazing to see the Park by water, it was an incredible experience to witness the huge frozen lake.

Food

Lunch

While you are exploring the Grand Canyon of Yellowstone, have lunch at the General Store, which also includes a gift shop. This will be a good opportunity to have lunch and refuel before continuing the adventure.

Dinner

For a unique dinner experience head over to Taqueria Las Palmitas, which is an old bus turned into a food truck.  After a long day of hiking and exploring, this restaurant was a perfect way to end the day.

Day 3: Mammoth Hot Springs & Lamar Valley

Activities

First Stop

Mammoth Hot Springs is true to its name – this location is truly mammoth in size. Pictures do not do Mammoth Hot Springs justice when trying to capture the size of this amazing natural creation. Spanning over an Upper and Lower Terrance, a boardwalk will lead you on a 1.5-mile walk. In addition to the amazing landscape, we had the opportunity to see a youth mule deer waking up from a nap.

Second Stop

Lamar Valley is an amazing location to view vast amounts of wildlife. While driving through Lamar Valley, we had the chance to see bison, coyotes, mule deer, and even a sleeping black bear! While driving through Lamar Valley there are many great pull-offs to explore to see more wildlife and amazing landscapes.

One of the most memorable experiences was going to see the Petrified Tree, which is a tree that was fossilized. To be very honest, the tree was not very exciting. However, off into the distance where trailhead began, we spotted a black bear sleeping under a tree! Luckily, no one had ventured down the trail and chanced to spook the bear. It was a truly incredible experience. Can you spot the bear? This is when all nature and wildlife photographers wished they had just a little bit more zoom capabilities.

Bear

Food

Lunch

While visiting Mammoth Hot Springs, be sure to grab lunch or a snack from the General Store. This will be a good rest stop before making your way over to Lamar Valley.

Dinner

On your last night of vacation, have dinner at Montana Ale house . We enjoyed having dinner at this restaurant as it was a good chance to enjoy a few local brews and cocktails.

Best 2 day Ski Guide to Breckenridge Colorado

Best 2 day Ski Guide to Breckenridge Colorado

For 2 epic days of skiing and snowboarding follow the below guide to understand how to navigate the mountain and the route to take to make it back to where you started.

Start Point:

Peak 9, Quicksilver SuperChair

From the Quicksilver Superchair lift, you will immediately have access to a wide variety of green trails. This will be a good location for beginners to practice and a good warm-up for more experienced skiers.

Starting the journey across the mountain:

From the top of the Quicksilver Superchair lift, ski down Silverthorn to the Peak 8 SuperConnect chairlift. From the top of the Peak 8 SuperConnect chairlift, you will have already travel a third of the mountain. From here you can ski, black diamonds, or 4 O’clock, which is the longest trail at 3.5 miles.

If you take the 4 O’clock route, either ski back down to Peak 8 SuperConnect or travel further across the mountain.

To travel further across the mountain take either:

  • Columbine – a flat trail running across the mountain; or
  • Springmeier – a green that will drop you off at the bottom of Rocky Mountain SuperChair

Now make your way towards the Independence SuperChair lift. To arrive at this chairlift, you can take either:

  • Northstar – a steep blue trail that will connect to Claimjumper; or
  • Claimjumper – a wide open space trail (we love this route!)

Food

Located at the top and bottom of the Independence SuperChair lift are two amazing lunch options, Sevens & Pioneer Crossing.

Sevens is located at the bottom of Peak 7, directly in front of the Independence SuperChair lift. Here you can either enjoy a sit-down meal or grab a quick-service lunch from The CoopEither option will provide the mid-afternoon break that is needed from a morning of adventure. After lunch, hop on to the Independence Chair lift to continue the mountain adventure.

Pioneer Crossing is another great lunch option. Located at the top of the Independence SuperChair Lift, this restaurant will allow you to beat the crowds of the restaurants located at the base of the mountain. In addition, enjoy the beautiful view of Breckenridge’s mountain range!

After a lunch break

Choose from a variety of trails that are located at the top of the Independence SuperChair Lift. From the right of the Independence SuperChair lift, you can take a variety of blue trails, such as Monte Cristo, Angel’s Rest, Wirepatch, etc…

However, we recommend taking the scenic route through a little backcountry skiing on the black diamond called Wanderlust. Always know your limits when skiing and snowboarding, there are many risks when exploring trails that travel through trees. Always use your judgment.

From Wanderlust, a great route to take to ski down Peak 6 is to take the Kensho SuperChair. When we traveled during March, the conditions at the top of the mountain were stunning, but the wind was heavy and tossed the snow, which impaired visibility. Unless you are looking for double black diamonds, we recommend taking the 2 blue routes located on the left and right side of the chairlift.

From either blue route, take Lost Horizon and Monte Cristo back down to the bottom of the Independence SuperChair lift.

With over 180 trails on the mountain, continue to explore the beautiful Breckenridge Ski Resort for the rest of the day.

Returning to the Start Point:

When you are ready to return to Peak 9, Quicksilver SuperChair from the top of the Independence SuperChair lift, take the following trails:

  1. Lower Forget-Me-Not to Northstar
  2. Colorado SuperChair lift
  3. 4 O’clock to Crosscut to Lower Sawmill
  4. Bypass the Beaver Run Superchair
  5. Arrive back to the Quicksilver SuperChair

Day 1: Arrive in Denver, Colorado

Logistics

Flight

For an unforgettable skiing vacation to Breckenridge, Colorado, fly into Denver International Airport.

Only a short 1.5-hour drive from Breckenridge, DEN  is the most convenient airport to fly into when visiting Breckenridge.

Plan to arrive in Denver in the morning. We suggest arriving by 10:30 am. Arriving in the morning will allow you to have the entire day to explore Denver and make the drive to the Breckenridge Ski Resort.

Rental Car

When reserving the rental car, be sure to request a 4 wheel drive vehicle prior to arriving. If you are going West of the Eisenhower Tunnel, a 4 wheel drive vehicle is required during the winter & early spring.

We did not know this prior to arrival and had to purchase an upgraded vehicle that had 4 wheel drive. Save money and book correctly the first time!

Hotel

For the best vacation experience in Breckenridge, we recommend staying at the DoubleTree by Hilton. The perks of choosing this hotel are:

  1. Ski & Snowboard rental in the Hotel lobby (No more lugging around bulking equipment)
  2. A short 10-minute walk to Main Street Village, where there are hundreds of restaurants, bar & shops
  3. Directly across from Quicksilver Super 6, one of the main ski lifts

Activities

Red Rock Amphitheater is located only 13 miles west of Downtown Denver and in the direction of where you will drive to Breckenridge.

This amphitheater is a concert venue that provides musicians with a unique opportunity to take advantage of the natural acoustics from the surrounding rock formations.

When the Red Rocks are not being used for music events, many people use the amphitheater as a fitness venue.

During your visit to the Red Rocks be sure to adventure out of the car and explore all that the Red Rocks have to offer:

  • Over 850 acres of hiking and biking trails
  • Walking up 380 steps to the top of the amphitheater
  • Taking in the amazing view from the top of the Red Rocks

Once you have explored the Red Rocks, start the 1 hour and 20-minute drive to Breckenridge, Colorado. As you drive to Breckenridge, keep taking in the scenery. It was amazing to see how drastic the climate had changed once we crossed through the Eisenhower tunnel. The temperature was in the 60s at the Red Rocks and then dropped quickly to 25 degrees. Since we wanted an unforgettable 3 day skiing vacation in Colorado, the sudden drop in temperature was perfect for the snow activities in Mid-March.

Red Rocks Amphitheater

Food

Lunch

We ate at a unique and local sandwich shop called Cheba Hut Toasted Subs. The sandwiches were fresh and very tasty. The atmosphere at this restaurant is quick service casual, which was perfect for making this a delicious quick stop for lunch.

Next, for an after-lunch treat, we grabbed cappuccinos from Thumb Coffee. The cappuccino was very fresh, full of caffeine and the customer service was great.

Groceries

Before heading up the mountain, we stopped at Safeway in Fresco, Colorado to stock up on frozen breakfast burritos, granola bars to take on the slopes, and cold brew coffee. When traveling, we love to adventure to local restaurants, but it is nice to not rush around for every meal when adventure awaits.

Dinner

After checking into the DoubleTree by Hilton, take the short ten-minute walk into the Village on Main Street to have dinner at Whiskey Star Smokehouse. Dinner exceeded our expectations of being delicious and comforting after a day of travel.

The unforgettable 3 day skiing vacation in Breckenridge, Colorado made memories that will last a lifetime.

Before we knew it, we were back in the office and back to our routine lives. But for 3 days, we picked adventure over routine.
